Questions
What people ask before they book
If yours is missing, ask it on the first call.
What does a session cost?
I bill by the hour for time in session and for the written summary, at a rate I give you in writing before the first session. The fee is split evenly unless you agree otherwise. There is no retainer, and the first call is free. If either of you hires a lawyer, that cost is separate.
Do both of us have to want to be there?
Yes, at least enough to try. I speak with each of you before the first session, and either of you can stop at any point.
Can we meet online?
Yes. Most families spread across states do. I also meet in person at the office on SW Taylor Street.
Is what we say private?
Generally, yes. What is said in a session is confidential, with limits set by state law, such as threats of harm. I explain the limits before we begin.
If we reach an agreement, is it binding?
A memorandum of understanding records what you agreed. It binds you when you sign it as a contract, or when a court makes it an order. A lawyer for either of you can prepare that.
What if we cannot agree?
Then you've lost a few hours and kept your options. You can try again, go to a lawyer or go to court. What was said in session generally can't be used against you.
What if one of us is afraid of the other?
Tell me when I call you alone. If mediation isn't safe, I'll say so and point you to someone who can help. I don't run a joint session with someone who is afraid.
A question we missed?
Ask it on a twenty-minute call, or send a note.
